Convictions Of Steel

1 Thessalonians 1:2-4 (The Message)

"Every time we think of you, we thank God for you. Day and night you're in our prayers as we call to mind your work of faith, your labor of love, and your patience of hope in following our Master, Jesus Christ, before God our Father. It is clear to us, friends, that God not only loves you very much but also has put his hand on you for something special. When the Message we preached came to you, it wasn't just words. Something happened in you. The Holy Spirit put steel in your convictions. "

I read this today, and started thinking about all the students that come through our doors on Friday nights at NURV. Some of you have been coming here for months and months!! Others have only been here a handful of times. Either way, I'm so glad that you attend, and that there's a strong sense in you that you "belong" here. I want you to know that I pray for you. I pray that God's presence would be strong in your life, every day. I pray that you would continue building strong friendships with others you believe in Him. I pray that you would allow God's word to bring life to you everyday...bit by bit, changing your habits and your thinking. I pray that you would resemble Jesus...in your speech, faith, conduct, love and purity. An more than all this...I pray that you would recognize how much God loves you, and awaken to the FACT that God has a plan for your life. What we teach you every week is not just simple words; it's life and truth...breathed from the heart of God. Keep serving Him!! Stay strong!! Know that you're loved! We're proud of you!!

Handouts

2 Thessalonians 3:10-13 (The Message)

10-13Don't you remember the rule we had when we lived with you? "If you don't work, you don't eat." And now we're getting reports that a bunch of lazy good-for-nothings are taking advantage of you. This must not be tolerated. We command them to get to work immediately—no excuses, no arguments—and earn their own keep. Friends, don't slack off in doing your duty.

Many years ago, in Monterey, California, after a hard day of work the fisherman would pull their boats up onto the docks to clean their catch of fish from that day. There were always pelicans hanging around the docks looking for handouts, so the fisherman would feed the fish entrails to these eager birds. Eventually, the fishing industry discovered a new commercial use for fish entrails, so they quit tossing them to the pelicans. Would you know...those fat and lazy pelicans who had lived their whole life on handouts totally forgot how to fish for themselves!! Many of these birds even starved to death, hanging around the docks waiting for another handout!!

When it comes to both physical food, and spiritual food...don't have the stinking attitude in life that people owe you something!! Trust God. Depend on Him and work your butt off!! Only then will you gain a sense of self-respect and achieve your dreams!!

Romans 6 (The Message)

Romans 6

When Death Becomes Life
1-3So what do we do? Keep on sinning so God can keep on forgiving? I should hope not! If we've left the country where sin is sovereign, how can we still live in our old house there? Or didn't you realize we packed up and left there for good? That is what happened in baptism. When we went under the water, we left the old country of sin behind; when we came up out of the water, we entered into the new country of grace—a new life in a new land!

3-5That's what baptism into the life of Jesus means. When we are lowered into the water, it is like the burial of Jesus; when we are raised up out of the water, it is like the resurrection of Jesus. Each of us is raised into a light-filled world by our Father so that we can see where we're going in our new grace-sovereign country.

6-11Could it be any clearer? Our old way of life was nailed to the cross with Christ, a decisive end to that sin-miserable life—no longer at sin's every beck and call! What we believe is this: If we get included in Christ's sin-conquering death, we also get included in his life-saving resurrection. We know that when Jesus was raised from the dead it was a signal of the end of death-as-the-end. Never again will death have the last word. When Jesus died, he took sin down with him, but alive he brings God down to us. From now on, think of it this way: Sin speaks a dead language that means nothing to you; God speaks your mother tongue, and you hang on every word. You are dead to sin and alive to God. That's what Jesus did.

12-14That means you must not give sin a vote in the way you conduct your lives. Don't give it the time of day. Don't even run little errands that are connected with that old way of life. Throw yourselves wholeheartedly and full-time—remember, you've been raised from the dead!—into God's way of doing things. Sin can't tell you how to live. After all, you're not living under that old tyranny any longer. You're living in the freedom of God.

What Is True Freedom?
15-18So, since we're out from under the old tyranny, does that mean we can live any old way we want? Since we're free in the freedom of God, can we do anything that comes to mind? Hardly. You know well enough from your own experience that there are some acts of so-called freedom that destroy freedom. Offer yourselves to sin, for instance, and it's your last free act. But offer yourselves to the ways of God and the freedom never quits. All your lives you've let sin tell you what to do. But thank God you've started listening to a new master, one whose commands set you free to live openly in his freedom!

19I'm using this freedom language because it's easy to picture. You can readily recall, can't you, how at one time the more you did just what you felt like doing—not caring about others, not caring about God—the worse your life became and the less freedom you had? And how much different is it now as you live in God's freedom, your lives healed and expansive in holiness?

20-21As long as you did what you felt like doing, ignoring God, you didn't have to bother with right thinking or right living, or right anything for that matter. But do you call that a free life? What did you get out of it? Nothing you're proud of now. Where did it get you? A dead end.

22-23But now that you've found you don't have to listen to sin tell you what to do, and have discovered the delight of listening to God telling you, what a surprise! A whole, healed, put-together life right now, with more and more of life on the way! Work hard for sin your whole life and your pension is death. But God's gift is real life, eternal life, delivered by Jesus, our Master.

"Becoming Who You Are"

Hey Everyone!! Welcome to this week's posting...I was reading this article today written by our Pastor, Leon Fontaine. I loved it so much, I just had to share it with you!! Enjoy!!!

BECOMING WHO YOU ARE!
Released: Nov 09, 2008

Everyone wants to feel important and worthwhile.

It’s a basic human desire to want self-worth and a positive self-esteem, to know we’re important, our contributions are significant and we are needed by others.

But many people have the wrong idea about where self-worth comes from. They think it is obtained through achievement or accolades without realizing it already lies within them.

For no other reason than because you are who you are, God loves you and has deemed you to be worthy and dignified. Lasting self-worth simply comes from having a personal relationship with Jesus and knowing He loves you and made you worthy. In doing so, you’re off to the best start, but when you take it one step further by modeling yourself after Him and striving to do amazing things for Him, you’ll rise up to achieve an extraordinary destiny. In challenging yourself to be your best for Jesus, you’ll be filled with self-worth that isn’t contingent on any other factor than being who you are through Him.

Here are a few more keys to developing self worth:

1. Understand your greatest need, after Jesus, is having self-worth. When you feel good about yourself and feel God’s love in your life, you’ll be able to overcome every obstacle in your path and use challenges as stepping stones to a higher level. Feeling good about yourself is important, so look to Jesus to help you become your best.

2. Desire is a powerful force that can help or hinder you. It’s okay to desire great things for your life – like a fantastic marriage, awesome career and enough money in the bank to pay your bills, travel or do other fun things. In fact, God has planted desires in your heart and wants you to go after your dreams. But He wants you to use wisdom when chasing your dreams and to remember that fulfilling them is not the key to lasting self-worth. Don’t fall in the trap of chasing after a title or status or any other superficial means to achieve self-worth, otherwise you’ll be left feeling empty and unfulfilled.

3. Your destiny is in who you are, not in what you do. It’s not as important to focus on what you want to do, as it is to focus on who you want to be. Determine the type of person you want to be and ask Jesus to help you become that person. Your desires, goals and dreams will fall into place more easily once you’ve become the person you were meant to be through Jesus. Being a courageous leader, an awesome parent or spouse or a world class entrepreneur, will happen automatically. In other words, model yourself after Jesus and become the amazing person He created you to be and your destiny will fall into place. Remember, the way to really change is to believe in who you are and then grow into all God intends.

Jeremiah 29:11

Jerimiah 29:11 - "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

God is not someone who leaves us here on this earth with all this 100% original potential - without some kind of a plan. Have you ever thought about that?
Have you ever made something just so that it could sit there and not be enjoyed? Would you ever make a beautiful, cheesey grilled cheese, filled with perfectly crisp bacon...just to sit it on the counter and not let anyone enjoy it, and to let the grilled cheese figure out its purpose on its own?!? NO WAY!! Not possible! It will never reach its potential to be nutritional in your body, and to taste oooohhh so good on its own. You made it with a plan!
We are so so so much more complex and have so much more potential locked inside of us than a grilled cheese sandwich! To fulfill our purpose, why should we think that we can just figure it out on our own and execute it without any help from our creator? WE CAN'T!! Just like the sandwich needs its creator to help it fulfill what it was designed to do, (to be eaten!) we also need our Creator to reach our full potential. Without our Creator, we just look pretty "sitting on the counter" and people look at you and think, "Wow! Look how much they have accomplished! They have made it out of the frying pan and onto the plate with some ranch sauce beside them! They are set!! They have arrived!!" But in actuality, we have done nothing to reach our true potential. Sometimes, we even look at other people who seem like they have arrived, look "finished" and appear to have a great life and have it all together. But really, they have not even begun to touch what they were created to do; to build, strengthen, and give life and energy into the church! What are we supposed to do with our skills? Strengthen the body, bring people to Christ and grow his church!! We need to realize that there is more to life then the frying pan or sitting on the counter - waiting to grow mouldy and be thrown out!! Never be satisfied with where you are. God always has more and more plans for you - more then you could ever hope, dare to dream or even imagine!! His plans will blow you away!! Don't watch other people living their potential wishing you could do the same. God has something in store for you that only you are uniquely and divinely designed for!! Get off the "counter"!!

MJ...

So...I watched some of the footage from MJ's memorial this week. First of all, I'd like to go on record as saying that I think Micheal Jackson was a brilliant musician. I wouldn't say that he always made the best "life" choices, but his musicianship was first class!! I was truly amazed at the amount of "pop icon" celebs that made an appearance at MJ's service on Tuesday. This unbelievable outpouring of support from the music community...WOW! I listened in awe to so many great performances giving tribute to Micheal. It got me thinking about heaven again...
It's so clear to me that so many people in our world desperately need to experience the grace of our great God. I feel so strongly that our gifts and talents were designed to pay tribute to the one true King. Not MJ...not Elvis. I'm referring to the King of kings. Our merciful creator God. I want to encourage you today to continue to use your life...every part...to pay homage to an amazing God who deserves your utmost attention.
